I’ve been designing and building websites for 10+ years and working in the marketing field for a good portion of that. That’s why I’ve seen the gamut of blunders when it comes to business websites. Over the years, it’s been easy to spot the most common website mistakes, which I’ll be sharing with you here, plus how to fix them.
I know from experience working with non-web people that there is a huge learning curve when it comes to creating a website and making the most of it. As an entrepreneur who’s trying to build a sustainable business, you have enough on your plate to think about, let alone have time to become an expert on websites.

As a someone who’s built my business from scratch who totally gets it where you’re coming from, I want to use my many years of web experience to help other intentional entrepreneurs create better websites that will help them grow their businesses.
I’ve put together this list of common website mistakes so that you can diagnose and improve your website in order to attract your ideal clients and customers and build your business.
Common Website Mistakes
1. Not appealing to your ideal clients
As a professional who’s trying to build a business you probably spend a decent amount of time promoting your offerings and directing people to your website. And if you’re a smart business owner, you probably are focused on bringing the right people to your site; the ones who really want what you’re offering; the ones who will end up signing up for your email list, following you social media, sharing your content, and hopefully, eventually purchase from you.
One of the biggest mistakes that people can make is confusing branding, or a lack of branding completely. If you’re not focused on speaking directly to the people who will vibe with your offerings, then you might risk losing their interest – and potential business.
How to fix:
If you haven’t already, you should spend time honing in on who exactly your ideal clients and customers are. This is the first step to being able to position yourself in a way that will let your target audience know that what you’re offering is exactly what they’ve been searching for.
That’s where branding comes in. Be sure that you have figured out what your business is all about and what you stand for. Make sure that you are being clear about your products and services and who they are for.
Try thinking about the design of your website from your potential clients’ point of view. When you have clear, cohesive branding, you position yourself as someone who knows what they’re doing. By positioning yourself as an expert, you start to build trust with potential clients and customers

2. Not having your own website
By far the most common issue I see other entrepreneurs who are wanting to grow their business online is not even having their own website at all! Maybe they use Instagram or a Facebook page or some other online service but haven’t actually set up their own website yet.

3. No calls to action
Another common mistake people make on their business websites is not asking for what you want. As I mentioned earlier, you probably spend quite a lot of time and energy marketing your business and directing people to your website.
But what happens once they get there?
Something I’ve learned in life is that often times you won’t get what you want unless you ask for it. So don’t be afraid to ask your website visitors to take the action you want them to take. Let me explain below…
How to fix:
Perhaps you are selling a product…
Then you’ll want to make sure it’s very clear and obvious how to do that. Make purchase buttons stand out and tell people how to take that next step.
If you’re looking to grow your client base…
You’ll want to make sure that there are multiple places on your website that ask people to sign up for your email list. This is important because the people who sign up for your list are the ones who are interested in what you have to offer; you want to be able to have a way of contacting these people in the future. If you don’t make a sign up form readily available they may leave your site and never remember you.
That may sound harsh, but think about it – how many sites do you randomly end up on in a week and how many do you remember the following week? You subscribe to the ones that you want to hear more from.

If you want someone to book a consultation with you…
Make it clear what they need to do – and make it easy. My favorite schedule tool (which I use on this website) is Acuity Scheduling.
If you want people to read more of your blog posts or content…
Be sure to link a lot between pages to connect people with related information. You can see how I’ve done it within this post; linking to past articles that are related to the current topic and beneficial to the reader.

4. Not using Google Analytics
Google Analytics is a free service from Google that tracks important data about who is visiting your website. You can see all kinds of really helpful information such as:
- how they found your website
- how long they spent on the site
- what pages they visited
- what content people looked at before signing up for your email list
- MUCH more…
Every website I launch as a web developer is hooked up to it because I feel it’s such a valuable tool!
How to fix:
If you’re aren’t currently using Google Analytics, head over and sign up for a free account now. It will provide instructions for how to copy/paste the tracking code into your site.
When searching for plugins for WordPress, make sure you only download from the official WordPress plugins directory. This will help ensure you’re getting a quality product with nothing that will hurt your website.
5. Not making it easy to use
Think about how many websites you visit in a day. How long do you spend on each website? What makes you stay interested or want to leave?
If the website doesn’t work right, takes too long to load, makes it hard to find the information you’re looking for or is just plain ugly then you’re probably not going to stick around for long.
These are things you want to think about from your potential clients’ perspective when planning out your website!
How to fix:
- Make sure you have the most important and relevant pages in your main navigation menu. For example, you can see on my site, I include “about,” “blog” and “resources” because those are pages that I know many people are going to be looking for or interested on my website.
- Add a search form to your website to make info easy to find. If you’re using WordPress you can easily add one to the sidebar.
- How are you reading this post right now? There’s a 40% chance that you’re on a phone or tablet (and I know that because – you guessed it – I use Google Analytics!). Make sure your website looks good on mobile devices! If it doesn’t you could seek the help of a web developer to make your site more mobile2-friendly. You could also consider choosing a pre-made responsive theme if you’re using WordPress.
- A lot of my clients also have needed my help with increasing the speed of their existing websites. (something that is never an issue when you’re enrolled in my Managed WordPress Hosting!) There are many ways to improve the speed of your website. A common one is to make sure you’re only uploading images that have a smaller file size. You can use an image shrinker plugin to compress larger files and a cacheing plugin to save space and page load times.
