You’re probably here because you want to learn how to build your own website. Maybe you want to grow your business, connect with a new audience or attract ideal clients. Whatever the reason, I want to help use my skills and knowledge to help you over the learning curve as painlessly as possible!
In this post, I’ll be explaining the first steps you need to take in order to build your own website and the important things to consider.
Think from the ground up
As an avid yogi, I hear in classes all the time about how the postures on the mat are meant to be practice for the real world. The things we do with repetition, strength and clarity in our focused hour-long practice are meant to prepare us for the challenges we deal with in “real life.”
I like to apply the same principle to my website goals!
You already know that building a website will take a little bit of investment…time, money, energy, focus, intention, etc.
If you’re going to put all of that into a project, you’ll want to make sure that you are using the best tools available so that you end up with a great website that is functional, powerful and profitable.
That’s why we need to create your website with a strong foundation (just like in yoga, for example).
Agreed? Ok great!
So, many times when people approach me about website stuff they literally have NO idea how to go from the idea of a website to even the first step toward actually having one.
If that’s you, no worries! That’s what I’m here for.
I want to take this post to tell you all about one of my favorite tools for how to build your own website with a strong foundation …hosting.Your website is your online home. Build it with a strong foundation! Learn how to find the right tools for the job>> Click To Tweet
Your website is your online home
The absolute first step to building a website is to secure two things: a domain name and hosting.
This means you will essentially be shopping for a place where your website will live on the internet. Think of hosting as the actual home or digital location in space and your domain name is the written address which tells people where to find it.
Have you ever heard the term web address? That’s because an address is exactly what a domain name is! Starting to connect the dots?
Purchasing a domain name is super easy and there’s many websites you can go to. I have used GoDaddy to purchase all of mine and it’s pretty straight forward.
Make sure it’s a comfy home!
Just like when you’re shopping for an actual place to live, you’ll want your website to have a home with all of the necessary creature comforts it needs for you to live happily.
In website speak, some of the most important things you’ll want to consider when looking for hosting are:
- logistics + compatibility
- quality customer support
In order to explain all of the items in the above list, I’m going to introduce my top recommended web host, Flywheel.
What to look for in website hosting:
Logistics + compatibility
When deciding on a hosting company, you’ll first want to make sure that their systems support the functionality you need. For WordPress websites, which is what I’m discussing here, you’ll want to make sure they support: PHP version 7.2 or greater, MySQL version 5.6 or greater OR MariaDB version 10.0 or greater and HTTPS support.
If that looks super scary, please don’t run away! You don’t even have to know what any of that means, I promise!
I’m here to show you how to build your own website without knowing any scary tech or coding stuff!
That’s actually the first reason that Flywheel is so AMAZING. They make it SUPER easy to get your hosting set up without having to know any techie coding stuff at all.
That’s because it was literally made-for-Wordpress. This means that any requirements that WordPress ever requires, Flywheel will always meet them. Less headache for you!
Did you know that the standard web hosting from companies such as GoDaddy and BlueHost is what is called shared hosting. This means your files share the same space as those from other websites and entities. If you’re thinking, “Eek! I don’t like the sound of that!” than you would be right!
The security of your website may not be the first thing you think about when you decide to build a website, but malware can do a ton of damage to your website! Learn how to keep your website safe with this awesome tool Click To Tweet You don’t want to put a bunch of work into building an awesome online presence only to have it messed up by some hacker or malicious bot.
With Flywheel, your website gets scanned every. single. day.
This protects your site against evil icky internet stuff (aka malware and malicious hacking attempts). And it’s guaranteed, which means if something still happens to go wrong, it will get fixed for FREE!
More security details if you need even more reasons to love Flywheel:
- nightly malware scans
- known hackers are actively blacklisted
- limited login attempts protects against brute force attacks
- not in a shared environment (other hosts have security leaks due to multiple sites being on one
- strong password enforcement
- custom firewall (following WordPress best practices)
- SSL certificate for eCommerce available
- no more security plugins needed!
Did you know that Google includes your site speed in its ranking factors? Not sure what that means? Let me explain…
If you plan on using your website as a tool to attract new customers(and I hope you do!), than you’ll probably be relying at least partially on Google search to help them find you. Preparing your website to make it easier for people to find it is called search engine optimization, or SEO, and it helps you show up higher in search results.
When you show up higher in search results, people see your link and you end up with more people visiting your website.
You want to know how to build your own website so that you can build your audience and grow your business, right?
Then you should care about site speed!
With Flywheel, you can be assured of the best speeds possible for both you and your users. They even include free performance assessments on your site’s code and setup. This means one less thing for you to worry about so you can stay focused on your main goal – growing your business!
And… if your business starts booming and you need to accommodate more users on your website (hey, think big, right?!) you can add that support with the click of a button.
Quality customer support
And finally, but most certainly NOT least… you want to ensure that you have access to quality customer support. Because chances are at some point you’ll need help with something. And most likely you’ll need help with that thing ASAP!
Don’t get stuck in a position where you need urgent troubleshooting and are unable to get in touch with the people who can help you.
With Flywheel, you’ll always have friendly and helpful support available 24/7.
Time to move in to your new online home
Now you know how to build your website with a strong foundation, and tons of support along the way.
At first you might be tempted to choose another host (from thousands of options out there) because it seems like lower cost.
And I used to be in the same exact position. I used shared hosting for many years before finally seeing the light, switching to Flywheel and NEVER LOOKING BACK.
Over the years working with many hosting companies, I can honestly tell you that Flywheel is 100% by far the best experience I’ve ever had! I use Flywheel for my own websites and I encourage all of my clients to work with them as well. Check out Flywheel hosting options>>
Feel free to take a look around and research other companies. Now that you’ve been enlightened about the criteria to look for, you can feel confident in your research!
